The name is also linked to the historical figure Domenico Piro, known as “Duonnu Pantu”, a Calabrian priest and dialect poet who wrote erotic sonnets.
He was born in Aprigliano in 1664 and was a cultured man, a non-conformist priest and author of a rich literary production. He is considered the first Calabrian dialect poet and in many respects a singular figure.
A poet who frees a village world from the weight of authority and cultural conditioning that had burdened life in Cosenza for over a century, dominated by a ferocious Inquisition that struck priests and lay people alike.
