Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects the articular cartilage, underlying bone and soft tissue mainly of the knees and hip, and is characterized by pain, inflammation and joint stiffness. People with this disease can have difficulty climbing stairs, walking, doing household chores and carrying loads, and is therefore the cause of disability, worsening quality of life and increased health care costs. It is estimated that about 23% of the world population over the age of 40 suffers from knee osteoarthritis, therefore more than 250,000 Calabrians have this clinical condition. The bioactive molecules, present in many plants, with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, could represent a new frontier for the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis, possibly to be associated with rehabilitation and drugs. In this regard, a study was conducted, funded by the Calabria region (POR CALABRIA FESR-FSE 2014/2020), entitled ALIFUR "development of new Functional FOOD for Rehabilitation", which saw the close collaboration between the U.O.C. of Clinical Nutrition of the "Magna Graecia" University of Catanzaro and Calabrian agro-food companies, such as the Astorino Pasta company from Crotone. In this study, a functional pasta enriched with hulled hemp seed flour was developed, produced and scientifically tested. This new functional food was taken by patients who were performing rehabilitation after arthroplasty at the FKTSalus srl centre, bringing both an improvement in pain symptoms and a reduction in bone alkaline phosphatase, a bone formation marker involved in bone turnover. in just 6 weeks. At the same time, the effects of the hemp seed extract were tested on a cellular model, highlighting the activation of two important pathways involved in bone metabolism as well as markers of differentiation and osteoblast formation.
